Accessible theatre for all at Theatre by the Lake

If you have a friend or family member who loves the theatre but feels less able to attend due to hearing loss or eyesight that wasn’t what it used to be, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Theatre by the Lake is offering Audio-described and Captioned performances of all three Main House plays in the Summer Season.

Bedroom Farce from foreground Adrian Metcalfe, Zoe Mills and Chris Hannon

If you struggle to see what’s happening on stage then why not come along to our Audio-described shows? The performance dates are as follows: Bedroom Farce on Thu 30 August at 2pm; Dry Rot on Sat 27 October at 2pm; and Great Expectations on Sat 10 November at 2pm. Theatre can be made accessible and enjoyable to someone with a visual impairment through live audio description. You sit in the auditorium as usual and as the play unfolds all the action is described to you via personal headphones. A touch-tour (given by the audio describer and stage crew) is available on request before the Audio-described performance, enabling you to gain an impression of the stage and set.

Dry Rot From L to R Chris Hannon and James Duke

If on the other hand you find it difficult to hear what is being said when you attend the theatre, then Captioning could help you. Captioned performance dates are as follows: Dry Rot on Wed 12 September at 2pm; Great Expectations on Wed 10 October at 2pm; and Bedroom Farce on Wed 17 October at 2pm. Once again, you simply sit in the auditorium and as the action plays out the words and sound effects are described in text on a caption unit displayed on the stage – just like television subtitling.

Great Expectations Maggie Tagney

This Summer Season at Theatre by the Lake is one of contrasts – choose from laughs, suspense, and family fun. Bedroom Farce is a vintage Ayckbourn comedy. There’ll be tears before bedtime in this hilarious story of four couples, three bedrooms and one eventful night. Dry Rot, a classic Whitehall farce, is the perfect fun show for all the family – there’s chaos, confusion and laughs galore as a gang of inept conmen attempt to kidnap a prizewinning racehorse. Great Expectations sees a host of unforgettable characters spring to life in this new and inventive adaptation of one of Dickens’ best-loved novels. A gripping tale of terrors, hopes, dreams and regrets.
