The A66 was closed in both directions at North Stainmore this afternoon to allow police, paramedics and Highways staff to attend a road traffic collision.
The collision involved a car and a tractor on the eastbound carriageway, two people suffered injuries.
A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) said: “The tractor driver, a man aged 47 was treated by the GNAAS trauma team and North East Ambulance Service Paramedics.
He was airlifted to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with head and serious back injuries.
The car driver was treated on scene for minor injuries and did not attend hospital.
Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Cumbria police on 101.
