Motorists rescued from snow as winter storms batter Cumbria

Eleven people have been rescued from cars trapped in snow on Kirkstone Pass today, Friday 31 January as winter storms battered Cumbria.

Three people were hurt following a two vehicle road traffic collision.

Langdale and Ambleside and Patterdale MRT were called to assist the North West Ambulance Service after the ambulance sent to the collision became stuck in snow.

A spokesman for Langdale and Ambleside MRT said: “One person was evacuated with back injuries, using our stretcher and there were two walking wounded.

“Approximately 8 other people were evacuated from the road because it was blocked by the snow and crashed vehicles.

“It would be fair to say that the road was not in any condition to be used before the collision occurred.

“Patterdale MRT attended from their side of the pass as well.”

Kirkstone Pass remains closed to vehicles.
