Steve and Jennie Allison’s shop Low Howgill Butchers & Deli in Appleby has just been made the Regional Winner for the North of England in the Butchers category by the Countryside Alliance Awards.
Just 18 months old, the shop provides fresh & cooked meats mostly farmed at nearby Milburn by owner Jennie’s parents. Steve (the butcher), along with the rest of the family realised the quality of the Shorthorn Beef being produced & decided to move into retail, firstly via market stalls & a local van round, then they took the step of opening the shop in what used to be the HSBC building in the centre of Appleby.
Much more than a quality butchers selling local produce, Low Howgill also has a Deli section with home cooked cold meats, homemade haggis & black pudding, handmade pies & sausage rolls & different hot lunchtime special every day alongside homemade soups.
Steve says “We’re really pleased to win this award & hopefully, it will benefit not just ourselves but the town as a whole, bringing in more customers for all of the fantastic small independent businesses in the town.”
Steve & Jennie will travel to The House of Lords next month for the grand final & a chance of being picking up the Countryside Alliance National Champion award.
