[T]wenty one years after their debut self-titled album and one and only UK tour, the tour de force that is Daphne’s Flight is returning to the stage. Their long-awaited reunion tour includes a date in Keswick and Theatre by the Lake is delighted to be hosting them for one night only on Mon 8 May at 7.30pm, for an evening of folk and rhythmic, soulful blues.
With a complete line-up of all five original members and a brand new studio album, this is the tour that fans have been waiting for since their first impromptu performance at Cambridge festival in 1995, when they took a packed club tent by storm and decided the time was right to join forces. Drawing on their collective wealth of talent and varied styles, each of them accomplished songwriters, musicians and renowned singers, it was the combination of all five voices, a powerhouse of harmonies, which left audiences breathless and brought them much critical acclaim.
As well as the many original songs they each brought to the group, they breathed new life into classic contemporary covers from The Beach Boys to The Beatles, Bill Withers to Randy Newman.
The band is made up of Christine Collister (The Richard Thompson Band), Melanie Harrold (The Hank Wangford Band), Helen Watson (The Love Notes), and Julie Matthews and Chris While (who have performed at Theatre by the Lake as BBC Folk award-wining duo While and Matthews). Their new album, Knows Time, Knows Change, is a beautifully crafted work of striking harmonies and crosses a wide range of genres, blending folk, blues, jazz and pop whilst also dipping into new and vibrant arrangements of classic songs such as Elvis Costello’s Shipbuilding. It will be featured in their concert here next month alongside old favourites from the group’s self-titled first album.
With as much energy and enthusiasm as they ever had, Daphne’s Flight are truly excited to be reuniting again and hope you will join them in the next leg of the journey for what promises to be a memorable year.
