[M]erseyside Police has confirmed ten men have been arrested today (Thursday, 20 April 2017) following violent disorder involving Tranmere Rovers FC and Barrow AFC supporters during a match played between the sides in February.
Officers from Merseyside Police and Cumbria Police today carried out a joint operation to arrest seven Tranmere Rovers supports and three Barrow supporters in relation to an incident of violent disorder that took place in the Prenton Park pub, on Borough Road.
The incident happened at around 3.15pm while an FA Trophy fixture between the football clubs was being played on 25 February 2017.
Seven men from Wirral, aged 21, 21, 23, 24, 24, 49 and 50 and three men from Barrow, all aged 45 have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. They are currently being questioned by detectives in relation to the incident.
Superintendent Chris Hitchell of Merseyside Police said: “The majority of Tranmere and Barrow fans went to the game to enjoy it for what it was – a football match between two passionate clubs.
“Sadly a relatively small minority from both sets of spectators seemed intent on confronting each other and officers worked hard to identify those responsible.
“The police will not tolerate the selfish and idiotic actions of a few attempting to spoil a game of football that the vast majority of people went along to enjoy. We will continue to work with Tranmere and visiting clubs to crack down on any disorder at any future fixtures.”
