Firefighters continue to tackle major fire in Maryport

[E]mergency services are continuing to tackle a fire at Glasson Industrial Estate in Maryport.

The A596 is expected to remain closed near to the industrial estate for the rest of the evening and into the night as the blaze is dealt with.

Police were called at 1.38pm today and have been working closely with the Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service throughout the afternoon.

Members of the public are advised to keep their windows closed due to the level of smoke.

Nearby buildings were evacuated earlier in the day.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 13:30 firefighters were called to a report of bracken on fire on Glasson Industrial Estate.

“Eight fire engines and an aerial ladder platform have been called to the scene which is in fact, a building fire.

“The building, used for manufacturing synthetic turf, measures 40 metres x 50 metres and is heavily involved in fire.

“Firefighters are continueing to tackle the blaze using main jets.

“This incident is expected to continue for some time.”

Sue Hayman MP, member of parliament for Workington, said: “I am shocked to hear about the huge blaze in Maryport this afternoon and wanted to thank the Fire Service and Cumbria Police for their fantastic efforts in tackling the blaze and keeping people safe.”
