[A] JURY in the trial of a man accused of carrying out a “baton” attack in Maryport has retired to consider its verdicts.
John Martin Porter, 37, is alleged to have committed two crimes in a residential area of the town on August 19 last year.
It is alleged Porter attacked Andrew Winder with a metal, police-style baton, striking Mr Winder about the the legs, ribs and head. Mr Winder attended hospital the following day with a broken jaw and bruising, and later underwent surgery.
Porter, of Mulgrew Close, Maryport, denies charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and having an offensive weapon. He has told jurors the complaints against him are “wholly untrue”.
Porter also denies a charge which alleges he intimidated Mr Winder’s partner, Kirsty Whitehead, in September. He maintains that simply did not happen.
After hearing all evidence in the case, jurors this afternoon (THURS) retired to start their deliberations.
