[T]he organisers of a photography exhibition in Carlisle say they’ve had a ‘wonderful’ and ‘eclectic’ international response to an open call for work exploring the idea of ‘the home’. Pictures from of 29 photographers from at least six countries has been selected to be shown in an exhibition in Carlisle later this month (26 June – 21 July).
The Visualising the Home exhibition ties in with an academic conference, of the same name, being held at the University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus on 13 and 14 July. Both events will explore the vast and varied topic of ‘home’ in the modern world, as it is seen through contemporary photography.
The open call for submissions was aimed at emerging, mid-career and established photographers. The 29 successful submissions were chosen from a total of 59 sent in from the UK, the USA, Spain, Germany, Israel, Italy and the Netherlands.
The exhibition is being organised by the non-profit group Carlisle Photo whose co-director, Anna Bridges, said: “The response to the open call has been wonderful, we’re thrilled to have had submissions from all over the world. It’s allowed us to view an eclectic range of ideas, thoughts and feelings from photographers of different backgrounds and cultures.”
Anna said the organisers are excited to see the finished exhibition installed at the Vallum Gallery: “We hope people will join us on the open viewing night – Thursday 13th July – where you will have the opportunity to talk directly to some of the photographers involved”.
The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge. The open viewing night, on 13 July is from 5.30 to 7.30 pm.
Attendance at the Visualising the Home academic conference is by pre-registration only.
