[A]spiring medical students from across west, north & east Cumbria are coming to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for a ‘Career in Medicine’ event, starting this Friday.
The two-day event, to be held on Friday 30 June and Saturday 1 July, is now in its fourth year of seeking to inspire potential medical students into taking up the profession.
The event invites local school students from across years 11-13 who are considering studying medicine or pharmacy the chance to meet senior and junior medical staff and to gain top tips for medical school entry. The event is also open to anybody who has already left school and is considering studying medicine as a postgraduate degree. All those attending either attend school or are primarily a resident in the areas the Trust’s two hospitals serve – i.e. the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
Around 70 aspiring medical students attended last year from across the north of the county including Whitehaven, Keswick, Wigton, Penrith and Carlisle. The feedback received from the students after the event was very positive. Examples of feedback received include:

This year’s event will be held in the Education Centre at the Cumberland Infirmary and will feature a series of interactive sessions and workshops held by the Trust’s top clinicians. The sessions will cover a range of topics such as:

Mr Andrew Robson, consultant ENT surgeon and course director, said: “I am thrilled we are able to offer the event for another year. It is incredibly important to encourage as many of Cumbria’s brightest and best to pursue a career in medicine. I am very much looking forward to welcoming more aspiring medical students to the Cumberland Infirmary on Friday.
