[P]olice are investigating a two vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on the A6 at Plumpton.
The collision occurred at approximately 12.35pm at the Plumpton Foot junction.
The collision involved a grey VW Golf and a white van.
The driver of the Golf, a 39-year-old woman from Carlisle, suffered minor injuries. The front-seat passenger of the Golf, a woman aged in her 70s, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the van, a 29-year-old man from Gateshead, was uninjured.
A spokesman for GNAAS said: “We were called to the A6 at Plumpton, after a woman, believed to be in her 70s, was involved in a road traffic collision between a car and a van.
“The patient sustained life-threatening injuries to her chest, hip and ankle and was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.”
The road was closed in both directions but has now reopened.
