[W]ith five castles within five miles of Kirkby Stephen, the Eden Valley is rich material for writers. At Conversations in Castles, three local authors discuss their books inspired by this historic landscape.
Outdoor writer Mark Richards talks about Castles of Eden, the long-distance walking trail he devised in 2017. Exploring the Eden Valley, the trail travels 42 miles from Kirkby Stephen to Penrith through a gently undulating landscape enlivened by castles, ancient stones, earthworks and ruins.
Northern Warrior and 1314 are epic adventures based on historical fact about 14th-century knight Sir Andreas de Harcla. Author Adrian Rogan recreates for us the tension as locals gather in Hartley Castle on the eve of another battle.
Twenty years ago Simon Temple-Bennett bought a near-derelict 18th-century folly close to Kirkby Stephen, Augill Castle, turning it into the successful, idiosyncratic boutique hotel it is today. Simon shares tales from his colourful castle life, as featured in his witty and engaging books Undressed for Dinner and Stop for Breakfast.
