[I]n the Smutfit Kappa Cumberland County League Premier Division, Aspatria are now three points clear at the top of the table after a 0-3 away win over Netherhall in Maryport, with Aspatria’s goals from Darryl Creighton, Mark Irwin and Stephen Harrison. Still undefeated with nineteen points from seven games, Aspatria can thank defending champions Workington Athletic, whose 3-1 win over Wigton Harriers knocks a hole in Wigton’s title challenge. Athletic’s sharp shooters were Tony Berwick, Gareth Brunton and Greg Quayle and Wigton’s only goal came from Dan Stockdale. Aspatria are top, Wigton second, Cleator Moor Celtic third and Workington move into fourth spot, with four games in hand over the top two teams.
At the other end of the table, Cockermouth triumphed 3-1 over Carlisle City Reserves. Carlisle started the better on a heavy pitch, and went ahead after just 11 minutes with a Gaz Richardson strike, but goals from Conor Cooke, Kyran Bertran and a City own goal meant a good win for Cockermouth, and three vital points in an improving season. The win pushes Cockermouth up the table into sixth place. City remain rooted to the bottom without a point from five games. Frizington Whitestar’s match with Silloth was postponed, with Whitestar unable to raise a team.
In Division One, Unisun put in a self admitted “dismal performance” against Bransty Rangers, losing 8-3. The Scholars goals came from David Osbourne (2) and Shane Dorward, and Bransty’s eight came from a Macauley Woodburn hat trick, a brace for Jamie Thursby and goals for Dan Fowler, Tom Smith and Liam O’Pray. Bransty go top of the table. with Gosforth second on goal difference but Pirelli are undefeated in third place with three games in hand over the top two, and just three points behind.
In the only other surviving Division One match, Whitehaven Miners lost 0-6 to Borough whose goals came from a brace apiece from Dale Hooper, Liam McCullough and Andrew Marshalsea. Borough are now fourth, Unisun fifth and Miners propping up the table. The games games between Pirelli and Whitehaven Amateurs, and Windscale and Crown Newlaithes were postponed.
