[M]usic and art will come together for a one-off unique event at Egremont’s Florence Arts Centre on Saturday 14 October when musicians Phil Furneaux and Krys Markowski join forces with artist Stephen Warner for FuMarProvisation: an art and music happening.
The day is split into two parts. From 12noon to 3pm there is a free collaborative improvised art and music session which will see accomplished musicians Phil and Krys create new pieces of music in response to Stephen’s improvised art; likewise, Stephen will “paint” the music. Starting with a blank canvas and no sheet music, FuMar and Stephen will respond to each other’s creative energy, with Stephen painting the music and FuMar ‘playing’ the painting. This should be a fascinating experience – and you are invited to get involved too. If you’re an artist of any kind and you’d like to take part you can contact the arts centre to register your interest – then come along and draw along live at the event, or just be a spectator to see how the work is made.
In the evening, the pieces created at the afternoon workshop will be exhibited and FuMar will be performing live. Tickets for the evening concert cost just £5 and you don’t have to attend the afternoon workshop to come and enjoy the show.
FuMar began to perform in the bars of Paris in 2011 and have since have toured the North West and France with their unique brand of cool jazz which has earned them a reputation for being innovative, harmonic and melancholic. Their recent concert in Carlisle was described as like “having the Parisian Left Bank in a drizzly Carlisle. Fumar’s music with its relaxed jazz rhythms brought warm sunshine to a grey evening.”
Phil Furneaux (sax) and Krys Markowski (piano) draw on their 40 years of friendship to create their music. The trust and security they have allows them to experiment and be innovative. Along with their interpretations of the standards from the likes of Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.
FuMar’s experimental classical/ jazz fusion has been compared to the sounds of Jan Garbarek.
Their second album “Lanercost Sessions 2 ” (CD Baby 2016) received acclaim for it’s original compositions and dark atmospheric soundscapes.
Come down to Florence Arts Centre on Saturday 14 to experience this collision of art and music; get involved and bring your own painting or sketching tools, or just come to enjoy a night of live jazz.
