[A] DRUNKEN teenager who tried to rob one schoolboy and assaulted another has been spared immediate custody.
Luke Hagan, 18, had downed lager and vodka before approaching the 16-year-olds close to the Beehive pub on Warwick Road at around 2am on August 25.
Hagan grabbed one by the arm before demanding the other hand over his money and phone. His criminal conduct was halted as a passing police officer stopped and intervened.
Hagan admitted charges of attempted robbery and assault, and was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court today (FRI). He was said to be “sorry” for offences he “couldn’t recall” committing.
Hagan, of Welsh Road, Carlisle, had a 12-month custodial sentence suspended for two years. He must also complete alcohol and “thinking skills” courses, rehabilitation and a four-month night-time curfew.
“You bullied them,” Judge Peter Davies said of the victims. There is no other way of describing it?”
Detective Constable Dawn Grant, North Cumbria CID, said: “This was a distressing incident for the two teenage victims who were simply walking along minding their own business.
“Hagan, who was drunk, set himself upon the two young men and assaulted them for failing to comply with his demands.
“Fortunately nobody suffered any serious or lasting injuries but that does not dilute the seriousness of Hagan’s crimes.
”Nobody deserves to be a victim of such offences which Cumbria Constabulary take very seriously. I’d encourage anyone who is victim of violent crime to report it to police so it can be investigated.”
