[A] DRUG addict who robbed a small Workington corner shop while armed with a piece of wood has been jailed for four years.
Adam Ian Littleton, 23, demanded money from the lone female staff member at By-Wise, Vulcans Lane, just after 10am on May 29. He had been seen acting suspiciously outside the premises moments earlier.
Carlisle Crown Court heard how Littleton – who had taken a “cocktail of substances” – ordered the employee to hand over cigarettes after being told there was no cash in the shop. But seeing the piece of wood had nails embedded in it, the terrified shop worker gave him £160 from the till.
Littleton fled but was found some hours later, behaving violently and spitting at a police officer upon arrest.
The shop worker was left shaken, had relived the incident “over and over” and feared at the time she would be “pummelled”, the court heard.
Having admitted charges of robbery, offensive weapon possession and police assault, Littleton, of Central Avenue, Egremont, was sentenced today (FRI).
He was jailed by Judge James Adkin, who also imposed an extended two-year licence period, concluding Littleton was liable to commit further crimes and posed a significant risk to the public.
