[T]he winner of the Trilby Tour Championship of Cumbria, held at Carus Green golf club, was finally announced on Sky Sports on Tuesday evening. The competition, which is one of the biggest golf tournaments in the industry, was held on 22nd June with Sky Sports covering the event. Those not present on the day had to wait until this week when the winner was finally revealed!
Following a nail-biting climax which saw four competitors going head-to-head in the play-off, Sheffield-based Paul Naylor took the top spot following an eight-inch putt for par on the 18th hole: “Words cannot describe how I feel,” said 53-year-old Naylor, who plays off a handicap of six. “I never expected to win. The idea was to compete but mostly to enjoy the whole experience and not end up on Rogues Gallery. I don’t know what happened in the playoff, I was in the ‘zone’ I think because I felt quite calm. I can’t stop smiling!”
Naylor was joined in the play-off by John Stott, also with a handicap of six, Grant Qualey, with a handicap of three and Brendan Delaney, with a handicap of 15. The talented foursome replayed the 9th, 4th and 18th holes, but it was Naylor who held his nerve to win the day.
130 players, plus caddies, turned out at Carus Green to compete in the prestigious amateur golf tournament, in its 10th anniversary, and attracted some famous faces, with Brian McFadden and Geordie Shore’s, Gaz Beadle, also competing. The grand final of the championship was held on 31 August at Hull golf club and will be shown on Sky Sports on 18th December.
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their kind and complimentary words about Carus Green on the Sky Sports Golf channel on Tuesday night,” said owner, Graham Curtin. “We were delighted to host the Trilby Tour Championship of Cumbria and really appreciate the positive comments about the course and venue – we believe it showed Carus to be the superb golfing destination we know it is. Many congratulations to Paul Naylor, who became the first Trilby Tour Champion of Cumbria; he is a worthy winner, and an all-round nice guy!”
