Liverpool teenager arrested on suspicion of Barrow rape
Police are currently speaking to a 19-year-old man from Liverpool in connection with the incident on Duncan Street on Friday 4th May. He was arrested last night in Liverpool on suspicion of rape and transported to Barrow Police Station where he will be questioned. Detectives are still appealing for anyone who was in the area
Penrith Christmas Lights to be scaled back to a bare minimum
The Penrith Chamber of Trade and Commerce has taken the decision to revise the plans for the traditional Christmas Lights event that takes place in Penrith each year. The Christmas Lights have been running for several decades, with strings of lights illuminating the town and a switch on event.
OAP airlifted from Newlands Valley with suspected broken leg
26 Members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team were called out at 4:55pm yesterday, 7 May after a 75-year-old lady from Wigan slipped on the Sail Beck path just above Third Gill in the Newlands Valley, Buttermere. Suspected broken leg, she was treated on scene by the Team and evacuated down to the Great North Air Ambulance in the bottom of the valley.
MP presents Olympic legacy funding to KSGS community sports hall

10 stone American Bulldog stuck on Wast Water Screes boulder field
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were called out at around 6.00 p.m. on Bank Holiday Monday to assist a pair of walkers who were stuck at the boulder field on the Wast Water Screes path. A limited callout was made and team members walked to their location from the south-western end of the lake
Penrith celebrates May Day 2012
Today, Monday 7 May saw the Lions Club of Penrith host its 32nd May Day Carnival in the town. The good folk of Penrith braved a day of chilly weather to be entertained and enthralled by the various shows, dancers and street artists. The rain held off for most of the day but things turned a little damp as the traditional carnival parade went through the town centre.
Record number of callouts in one day for Penrith Mountain Rescue Team
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team doubled its number of callouts this year when it had four callouts on Sunday 6th May. The Team was Swift Water Rescue training on the Eden when it was put on standby to assist Patterdale MRT in a search for a missing Coast to Coast walker. A man has today been charged with the manslaughter of Paul Green who died at Barrow-in-Furness on Friday 4 May following an incident on Penrith Street early on Thursday. The man has been named by police as Andrew John Logan aged 42, of Rawlinson Street Barrow. Mr Logan has been remanded in police custody
Borrowdale climber seriously injured in 50ft fall
A young man from the Newcastle area has been seriously injured in a climbing accident on Shepherds Crag Borrowdale. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and the GNAAS Pride of Cumbria were called to the incident at 1:30pm today Saturday 5 May. The man who is believed to be in his 20′s was attempting to climb Shepherds Crag when he fell.
Two arrested on suspicion of murder after man dies in hospital
Cumbria police have launched a murder investigation after a 44-year-old man who has been in the Furness General Hospital since the early hours of Thursday 3 May critically ill with a serious head injury has tragically died. The man has been named as Paul Eugene Green of Aldephi Court in Barrow-in-Furness.
Judge criticises police & CPS saying decision to ‘under-charge’ man was ‘seriously flawed’
One of Cumbria’s top judges has criticised a decision to charge a man who twice knocked his mother unconscious with nothing more serious than causing her actual bodily harm. Judge Peter Hughes QC said the man should have been charged with unlawful wounding, which would have enabled him to pass a much stiffer sentence than the three years
Northside Bridge spans the River Derwent for first time since November floods
Cumbria County Council’s multi-million pound reconstruction of Northside Bridge in Workington reached a key moment today (Thursday 26 April) when the steel ‘backbone’ of the massive structure spanned the River Derwent for the first time. Man given CPR after being rescued from Earnse Bay
A man was transferred to hospital by helicopter today after sustaining a knee injury and being unable to make it back to shore in Earnse Bay on the western side of Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness. A member of the public contacted Liverpool Coastguard at 5.40 pm to let them know that they could see a man and a dog approximately half a mile out
Two seriously injured in A595 collision near Workington
At 12:35pm today Wednesday, 2 May a serious road traffic collision occurred on the A595, Winscales, between the Lillyhall roundabout and the Melbreak Hotel Workington. A silver Ford Focus travelling from the Cockermouth direction was in collision with a red Fiat Ibiza travelling in the opposite direction.
First Ever 4G trial in the North of England launches in Threlkeld
