Clifton Parish Council request to increase numbers

Clifton Parish Council has made a request to Eden District Council to increase the number of its Councillors from six to seven due to the number of new housing developments that have already taken place, or are due to take place within the Parish.

Clifton Parish now has 450 electors although this is expected to rise further as people move into the new developments.  Typically in Eden, other parishes of a very similar size have seven councillors.

Eden District Council is carrying out a Community Governance Review under the Local Government and Public involvement in health Act 2007 to review the number of members and gauge the views of the electors within the Parish before a decision is made by Council.  The Terms of Reference for the review are:

  1. To review the number of members on Clifton Parish Council in the light of the Parish Council’s request to increase the numbers from six to seven with a view to implementing the changes as soon as is practicable; and
  2. that the review be undertaken in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 and any statutory guidance.

Electors living within the Parish have received a leaflet setting out the detail and requesting their views.
