Workington Reds 1 – 2 Penrith AFC Ladies

WORKINGTON APRIL[B]oth teams had to deal with the nightmare scenario of the referee not turning up for the match. Last minute efforts failed to find a replacement and the only thing way forward was for each team coach to referee a half each. Not ideal but both teams, to their credit, made the best of a difficult situation.

Workington took an early lead in only to 2nd minute Penrith keeper Michelle Jones attempted clearance was charged down by Hayley Bracken and the ball rebounded into the net.

The remainder of the 1st half was fairly even affair with both teams best chances coming from dangerous corners.

Into the 2nd Penrith were awarded an early penalty when Charlotte Smith was brought down in the area. Nat Broad stepped up to make it 1-1.

Penrith had the chance to take the lead when they were awarded a 2nd penalty for hand ball but on this occasion the retaken penalty was well saved.

Penrith continued to press for a winner and were rewarded in the 71st Nat Broad finished from 25 yards after good build up play.

Workington fought to get back in the game late on but Penrith hung on for a hard fought victory.
