[S]taff at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust are getting better at reporting incidents according to the latest national figures.
Information recently released by the NHS National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) show the Trust have achieved –
- A leap from being in the lowest 25% of reporters to being just shy of the highest 25%, in six months
- A 37% increase in the number of incidents that are reported- from 2,883 in October 2014 – March 2015, to 3,960 from April – September 2015
- A reduction in severe harm and death from 1.4% to 0.8% in the same time periods.
The NRLS is a system managed by NHS England, which has the world’s most comprehensive database of patient safety information, to identify and tackle important patient safety issues at their root cause.
These figures show that there has been an increase in reporting, rather than an increase in actual incidents.
Maurya Cushlow, Executive Director of Nursing said: “The Care Quality Commission stated in their last report that the Trust need to improve the reporting of incidents. We have been working hard with our staff over the last 12 months, helping them to understand why reporting incidents is so important and creating a cultural shift which ensures reporting is increased. Incidents occur in all NHS Trusts and it is imperative that staff report them so that lessons can be learnt. It’s great news that our staff are getting better at doing this and the Trust are keen to ensure this continues.
“There is still some work to do to maintain and build on our reporting rate, but the focus going forward has to be on learning lessons and making valuable quality improvements.”
