[A]n Air France flight has been intercepted by the RAF after air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft.

RAF jets were scrambled to intercept Air France flight AF1558 and escorted it into Newcastle.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police are aware of the reports of activity, which happened around half an hour ago, and are fully investigating, however it is believed it was due to a sonic boom by two RAF jets.

“Police believe there is no danger posed to the public.”

There are reports that several houses lost their windows due to the sonic boom.

The flight radar website Flightradar24 said: “AF1558 lost radio contact en route to Newcastle. RAF jets were sent to escort the flight.”
