[M]aryport sausage maker Taste of the Lakes Ltd has won this year’s prestigious “Favourite Butchers Cumberland Sausage” at the Sausage Festival at Muncaster Castle over the bank holiday weekend.
The competition is organised annually by the Cumberland Sausage Club, after a public blind tasting of the five entrants’ sausage, 74 discerning sausage eaters voted Taste of the Lakes Traditional Cumberland Sausage their favourite.
Taste of the Lakes have been making sausage, dry-cured bacon and a range of smoked meat and fish for many years in the town. The man responsible for the recipe, owner Rob Hodgson was delighted, he said “It is genuinely great to have your sausage voted a winner by the people who eat the sausage. We are so pleased our recipe has stood out at the Festival. It is a really good event, though we had some trials with the weather, we had a very good time there.” Their sausage sells through their First Choice Meats shops in Maryport, Workington, Cleator Moor and Dobbies Garden Centre at Orton Grange, Carlisle as well as to many hotels and restaurants throughout Cumbria.
With sausage called “Cumberland” selling throughout the UK, without ever seeing Cumbria, the Cumberland Sausage Club was formed to promote the genuine local delicacy. This is third year of this award, previous winners being Blackstock’s of Alston and Woodland Free Range Meats of Broughton-in-Furness.
The certificate was presented by TV Chef Peter Sidwell to Karen – who works in First Choice Meats Workington shop. Peter did a series of cookery demonstrations at the Sausage Festival, and kindly offered to do the honours. Peter is executive chef at Rheged nr Penrith, judge on ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery, runs his own cookery school and has a high successful cookery app Simply Good Food TV
