[A] new face is set to join Eden District Council’s Management Team on 27 June 2016, as the local authority completes part of the restructuring of its director level positions, following the announcements that long serving senior officers Paul Foote, Ruth Atkinson and David Rawsthorn are retiring.

Matthew Neal will be the District Council’s new Director of Governance and Monitoring Officer.

Eden District Council’s Chief Executive, Dr Robin Hooper, said: “The recruitment process for our Senior Officer vacancy has been very successful and attracted a high calibre of candidates. We are delighted therefore to welcome Matthew to Eden and I am sure Members and my fellow officers will look forward to helping him settle into his new role in the weeks ahead.”

Matthew Neal will be the Council’s new Director of Governance and Monitoring Officer. Matthew is currently the Solicitor and Deputy Monitoring Officer for South Lakeland District Council. Matthew moved to Cumbria in 2003 from the Wirral where he was brought up. He is married to a primary school teacher and has three children aged between 10 and 15.

Matthew Neal said: “I am very pleased to have been appointed and am looking forward to starting my new role. I am confident that the experience that I have had at South Lakeland, managing a busy Legal Service, and working with colleagues on a wide range of projects which cut across various professional disciplines has given me a solid grounding for the challenges which lie ahead for Eden.”

Dr Robin Hooper said: “This is a demanding time for local government as the way we fund and deliver services is evolving. The skills and experience of the Council’s existing Members and officers, plus our new director will help Eden to adapt and deliver these changes in the months ahead.”
