[A] cyclist has been flown to hospital in a critical condition following a road traffic collision on the A66 at Penruddock near Penrith.
Police were called at 4.17pm following reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a van.
Dr Theo Weston said: “A cyclist was knocked off his bicycle by a passing van while cycling along the A66 west of Penrith near Penruddock.
“He sustained very serious life threatening injuries and was attended to by two BEEP Fund Doctors, NWAS paramedics & the doctor/paramedic team from the Pride of Cumbria, GNAAS air ambulance.
“He was placed in a medically induced coma and stabilised at the scene before being flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.”
The A66 was closed in both directions at the Penruddock junction. but has now reopened.
