[A] TEENAGER who ransacked a woman’s Carlisle home during a night-time burglary has been locked up.

Food, personal items and even medication were strewn around the occupied house when drunken Darren McVittie, 19, broke in just after 4am on 8th March. A television was found destroyed outside the property.

Police located McVittie just 500 metres away. He was linked to the crime by a footwear impression left in bread which had been scattered around the trashed living room. This matched the make and model worn by him at the time he was arrested.

At Carlisle Crown Court today (THURS), McVittie was sentenced by Recorder John Corless. He admitted burglary and five other offences, committed on two different dates.

McVittie, of Cumwhinton Road, Carlisle, was sent to a young offenders’ institution for two years. He was told by the judge he had been responsible for a “catalogue of criminality”.

A 17-year-old Carlisle youth who also admitted involvement in the burglary was given a 12-month referral order.
