Teenage cyclist critical after south Cumbria crash

[A] teenage boy has been critically injured and another hurt in a road traffic collision near Duddon Bridge.

At approx 4pm on Tuesday 5 July a serious road traffic collision occurred on Smithy Lane between Duddon Bridge and Ulpha.

Two 17-year-old pedal cyclists from East Yorkshire were cycling down a steep gradient when one of the cyclists collided with an oncoming blue Peugeot 207, driven by a 44-year-old man from Barrow.

One cyclist received multiple injuries and was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital, his condition is described as stable but critical.

His friend collided with a wall and received minor injuries, he was treated at the Furness General Hospital but released a short time later.

The driver of the car was uninjured.

The road was closed for four hours for police collision investigation work.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101.
