[P]lans are well underway for this year’s Carlisle Pageant.
The free Carlisle City Council Puppet Parade and Funday will be held on Saturday 20 August and will celebrate the city’s history and heritage. Building on the success of previous events, this year’s 10-day programme will link in with the ancient proclamation of the Great Fair, to be held a week later on Saturday 27 August.
As part of the Pageant festivities, activities are planned within the city centre between 11am and 4pm. The programme will include lots of family friendly fun, including face painting and street entertainers.
A community parade including giant puppets depicting key historic characters from the Industrial Revolution. This year’s parade route will include more of the city’s historic quarter, incorporating the Cathedral grounds and will end outside the Old Town Hall. The route for this year’s Puppet Parade is:
Start at 2pm outside St Cuthbert’s Church – St Cuthbert’s Lane – Castle Street – Cathedral grounds – Abbey Street – Tullie House gardens – Castle Street – finish outside the Old Town Hall (some parts of the parade will turn onto St Mary’s Gate and Fisher Street towards the city centre).
The ten-day Pageant programme will also include Best of Carlisle Market stalls between Saturday 20 August and Tuesday 23 August, a Carlisle Fringe Festival between Sunday 21 and Tuesday 23 August and an international market between Wednesday 24 and Monday 29 August.

Best of Carlisle Market Stalls
Saturday 20 – Tuesday 23 August
The open-air market is organised in partnership with Food Carlisle and will include a variety of local producers. The stalls will be open between 11am – 5pm (Saturday), 11am – 4pm (Sunday) and 11am – 5pm (Monday and Tuesday). There will be also family-friendly activities including face painting.
Sunday 21 – Tuesday 23 August

International Market Stalls
Wednesday 24 – Monday 29 August
The return of this popular market with gifts, flavours and aromas from all over continental Europe and beyond. Stalls will be open Wednesday – Saturday between 9am and 6pm, Sunday between 10am and 5pm and Bank Holiday Monday between 9am and 5pm.
The Great Fair Proclamation

The Proclamation is a declaration of the City Council’s rights to hold an annual Fair in August, originally granted to the citizens of Carlisle in 1352 by Edward III.
