£1 million M6 resurfacing project gets underway in Cumbria

[A] £1 million Highways England project to resurface and repair a 2 mile section of the southbound M6 past Tebay services and junction 38 in Cumbria got underway on Monday (15 August)

The wear and tear repairs which include resurfacing, replacing fencing and installing new bridge joints – the mechanisms which allow the carriageway to expand or contract as the weather changes – are due to be finished in early October.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said: “This work will give drivers safer and smoother M6 journeys as we’ll be tackling wear and tear in the carriageway such as cracks in the top surface which regular users of the M6 will be aware of.

“We’ll be doing most of the work overnight and will need to close slip roads occasionally.”

Work will take place between 8pm and 6am each night with the carriageway kept open at all times and with drivers using lane 3 or the hard shoulder. There will be a single period when 1 lane of the southbound carriageway will be closed for 24 hours.

Where the work passes Tebay services or the slip roads at junction 38, overnight slip road closures will be needed and will be taking place, subject to weather conditions, on the following dates:

  • Overnight on Monday (22 August), Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 August – closure of junction 38 exit slip road from the southbound M6
  • Overnight on Tuesday (23 August) – no exit from 10pm from southbound Tebay services onto the southbound M6
  • Overnight on Tuesday 6 September – closure of the entry slip road onto the southbound M6 at junction 38

All road works will be removed between 6am on Friday (26 August) and 12.01am on Tuesday 30 August.  This is to help people travelling over the August bank holiday period.
