Fire and rescue crews successfully tackled a serious fire this morning at Kendal’s Westmorland Shopping Centre.
At 8:04am two fire engines from Kendal Fire Station responded to a report of a fire at the centre. When they arrived they confirmed that the fire was in one of the shop units on the first floor and was spreading quickly to adjacent units. A further six fire engines and a hydraulic platform were called to assist in tackling the fire.
Firefighters worked extremely hard to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further.
This was achieved by dividing the building into sectors before crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire with a number of firefighting jets.
Crews remain at the scene ventilating the property.
All roads that were temporarily closed have now reopened.
Cumbria’s Chief Fire Officer Paul Hancock said: “This was a major incident and crews responded admirably to a dangerous situation.
“It’s to their credit that the fire was quickly brought under control.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and will be conducting a follow up investigation to determine the cause.”
