A WEST Cumbria couple who neglected a number of children have been spared immediate prison sentences.
Carlisle Crown Court heard how police who visited a house in Whitehaven discovered it to be “filthy, cluttered and unhygienic”.
Two toddlers were found to have been fed Coca-Cola from bottles, and one had dental decay.
The adults, who can’t be named to protect the identities of the children, were sentenced by Recorder Michael Murray having each admitted four child cruelty charges.
The woman had also pleaded guilty to twice assaulting one of the children during a five-month period.
The man and woman were each handed suspended prison sentences, along with 100 hours’ unpaid work and rehabilitation requirements.
Recorder Murray told the pair: “You both should be thoroughly ashamed.”
