Cumbria County Council can confirm the new opening times for Penrith Library. A public consultation was held between 12 July and 2 August 2016 on proposals to close Penrith Library on Sunday’s (previously open 12pm – 4pm).
The consultation also provided two options for evening opening hours. Currently, the library is open until 7pm on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. Option 1 was to remain open on Monday’s and Tuesday’s until 6pm, and Option 2 was to remain open until 7pm on Tuesday’s only.
108 library users responded to the consultation. 69% agreed Sunday closure proposals. Regarding the evening opening hours proposals, 40% chose Option 1, 33% preferred Option 2 , 22% opted for ‘no change’ and 5% had no opinion. The Local Committee for Penrith agreed to implement the preference of the majority of respondents – Option 1 – and this will be trialled for a period of 6 months.
The new opening hours for Penrith Library are as follows:
- Monday & Tuesday: 09:30 – 18:00
- Wednesday, Thursday & Friday: 09:30 – 17:00
- Saturday: 09:30 – 16:00
- Sunday: Closed
Councillor Ian Stewart, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Community Services, said: “Cumbria County Council continues to be committed to our libraries. They are about more than just books. They are community hubs providing access to a huge range of resources, experiences and learning. However, like all council services, government cuts have put financial pressure on libraries. We’ve made every effort to manage this without affecting the service the public receives and as a result Cumbria has avoided the wholesale changes to library services which have occurred elsewhere in the country. I am very grateful to the local community for contributing to this consultation, and would also like to thank the Local Committee for Penrith for taking this difficult decision.”
Helen Fearon, Chair of Eden Local Committee said: “Thank you to all who participated in this consultation. Libraries are an important part of the local community and offer a range of important services. I am delighted that we have agreed new opening hours for Penrith Library that ensure the library remains open when people use it the most and that it will continue to serve the local community.”
