A591 closed at Bothel after lorry crash

[T]he A591 is currently closed in both directions between the A595 and B5291 following a collision between a car and an HGV.

The collision happened today (6 Dec) at around 10.15am and involved a Honda Jazz.

Police and fire are on the scene, along with an air ambulance.

The extent of the driver’s injuries are potentially life threatening and/or life-altering, she has suffered serious leg injuries.

A spokesman for the GNAAS said: “The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the A591 at Bothel, near the Castle Inn Hotel at around 10.30am this morning, after a collision between a car and an HGV.

“The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 36-year-old woman, suffered serious leg, arm and chest injuries. The GNAAS doctor-led trauma team assessed and treated the patient at the scene before she was flown to the Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary within 25 minutes.

“She arrived in a stable condition.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 10:26 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on the A591 Bewaldeth, Cockermouth.

“The collision involved one small and one large vehicle and the crews used two sets of cutting equipment to release a woman from one of the vehicles.

“An air ambulance also attended.”

The road is likely to remain closed for some time.
