[K]endal based charity CancerCare is appealing for supporters from the local business community to come forward to join its governing body of volunteer Trustees.
The local cancer support charity is looking to fill vacancies on its Trustee Board and appoint individuals who will provide guidance and expertise to help support the unique organisation that works with hundreds of families affected by cancer each year.
There are currently eight trustees at CancerCare contributing a wealth of knowledge and skills gained in a variety of sectors including business, I.T, law, education and healthcare.
Andrew Birchall, CancerCare’s current Trustee Chairman is an independent business consultant and has served on the Boards of a number of companies, joining CancerCare as a Trustee in 2013, and, was recently appointed Chair in October this year.
He says; “There is something about CancerCare that just resonates – and then you become hooked! When I first became involved with the organisation, I was really impressed by the commitment shown from everyone I met, whether as a Trustee, employee, volunteer or therapist. I was later invited to join the Board and it seemed a natural step to take and I continue to be enthused by the work we do.
“For me, the best thing about being a Trustee is having the opportunity to put my skills and experience to good use by helping a cause I care about. There is a great spirit within the organisation and I enjoy working with a very talented team who share in a common goal.
“Trustees play an essential role within a charity and there are some fundamental responsibilities that must be undertaken, including effective governance, adhering to charity law, managing the organisation’s resources responsibly and always acting in the charity’s best interest. And, whilst there are the broader elements to the role such as contributing to the development of strategy, working with and providing support to the Executive Team & staff is hugely rewarding.”
Founded in 1983 by a local Oncologist, CancerCare specialise in providing supportive, non-clinical care to local cancer patients, their carers and families, together with those bereaved.
Helping over 25,000 local people across North Lancashire & South Lakeland to date. The CancerCare team is currently supported by 20 staff, 32 therapists and over 120 volunteers at two dedicated centres in Lancaster & Kendal.
It costs £1million to provide the charity’s range of free services in the community every year, which include professional counselling, support groups and a range of complementary therapies, raised almost entirely through fundraising and donations.
CancerCare Chief Executive Officer Neil Townsend added: “We are blessed with a brilliant Trustee board at CancerCare and we want to thank all of them for the contribution they make, the time they volunteer and the important decisions they take to help shape the future direction of our charity. It is essential that we retain a balanced Board, to ensure our charity remains financially solid and sustainable, so that we can continue to be here for local families affected by the impact of cancer whenever they might need us.
“We are specifically interested to hear from people with a senior level marketing background including brand and communications experience. A detailed knowledge of CancerCare’s services or previous third sector experience is not essential, however, a willingness and desire to help CancerCare continue to evolve and thrive, delivering its support services to the communities we serve, is.”
