Man bailed after Whitehaven sex attack

[A] man arrested in connection with a sexual assault which occurred in Whitehaven on 5 January 2017 has been released on bail.

The alleged incident took place in the park in Woodhouse Road, Whitehaven, at around 8pm.

The victim was a 49-year-old woman.

Officers arrested a 44-year-old local man at the scene on suspicion of a sexual assault.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: “The 44-year-old man has been bailed until 7 March 2017 pending further enquiries.”

It is believed there were a number of members of the public in the area at the time of the assault who may have witnessed what happened or have information important to the investigation.

Detectives continue to urge anyone who witnessed what took place or who has any information which may assist to get in touch.
