Barrow Freegle Day

[P]eople in Barrow and surrounding areas can come along to their local Freegle event next weekend to grab a household freebie and give away any unwanted items.

The Give and Take day takes place on Sunday 22 January between 10am and 2pm at St Matthews Community Halls, Highfield Road, Barrow in Furness.  Anybody can pick up an item for free – including toys, books, clothes, kitchenware, furniture and ornaments, preventing goods from being sent to waste treatment or landfill.  It’s also an opportunity for householders to give away items they no longer need, for example any unwanted Christmas presents that somebody else might enjoy.

Across the UK, Freegle keeps approximately 1,000 tonnes of goods in circulation every month.

Cllr Janet Willis, Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “These kinds of events are becoming increasingly popular and really are great news for everybody involved. They mean that useful items find a new home rather than ending up in the household bin and ultimately one of our waste treatment facilities. So events such as these can really reduce the cost of waste in the county in so many ways and also help to nurture these positive behaviours amongst the people of Cumbria. I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and pick up a freebie!”

Jude Cowsill, Co-ordinator from St Matthews Community Halls of Barrow said: “Everyone is welcome to come along to our Give and Take day and you don’t have to donate in order to take something!  This is also a fantastic opportunity for people to dispose of unwanted items from the Christmas period and take them to this event rather than they go to landfill.”

Any goods left over will be donated to a local charity.
