[T]WO young men have been locked up by a judge for hurling lit fireworks out of a speeding car during a night-time police chase.
Arron Graham, 21, and Sheldon O’Neil, 18, were sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court today (FRI). They had each admitted a charge of causing danger to road users by obstruction to the road.
The court heard Graham and O’Neil were passengers in a Ford Mondeo being pursued by police between Caldbeck and Carlisle in the early hours of October 31 last year.
As the car reached speeds of 80mph on dark and damp rural roads, an officer heard loud bangs and saw bright lights as fireworks were thrown from both sides of the Mondeo. The driver, who was later jailed, carried on despite police deploying a stinger device.
Graham, of Weardale Road, and O’Neil, of Bousteads Grassing, both Carlisle, were caught, arrested and charged. They were each given immediate 12-month custodial sentences for what Judge Peter Davies called “dangerous offending”.
Both Graham and O’Neil also received 12-month driving bans.
