[P]enrith AFC Ladies moved smoothly into the Quarter finals of the League Plate competition after a comfortable 4-0 victory against Preston North End Ladies at Frenchfields.
Penrith took the opportunity to “shuffle the pack” for this League Plate tie giving valuable match time to Isabel Savage, Ruth Kennedy and Hope Lawson, as well as handing a full debut to 16 year old Emma Blair, while experienced striker Kerri Mallinson made her first appearance of the season.
Penrith started the game a high pace and had already squandered 2 chances by the time Kerri Mallinson gave them the lead on 6 mins. Penrith continued to press and made it 2-0 on 11 mins when Kerri Mallinson rolled the ball into the path of Chloe Grisedale who thundered the ball low past the keeper.
Penrith then made it 3-0 before the 20 min make. Charlotte Smith made a long solo run from her own half to the bye line before she picked out Kerri Mallinson at the back post who tapped the ball into the net.
Despite Penrith’s continued dominance in they failed to extend their lead and it remained 3-0 at half time.
Penrith experimented with formation in the 2nd half but lacked the sharpness of passing to make it successful.
Preston did see more of the play in the 2nd half and threatened late on but 16 year old keeper Hope Lawson comfortably protected her clean sheet.
Penrith had a golden chance to extend their lead when Chloe Grisedale’s shot was bloked on the line with the keeper beaten.
Chez Brierley rounded off the scoring late on after good build up play from Hannah Coulthard and Sarah Smith.
