A team of three Keswick AC runners, Mark Lamb, Lee Newton and Rupert Bonington who were all representing Team Mountain Fuel, the event sponsor, travelled to the Cheviots in the North East on Sunday. They took part in their first fell race of the season with the route climbing three fells, including the second highest in the Cheviots – Hedgehope, it was 12.4 miles with around 2800ft of ascent.
Mark Lamb finished 1st in 01:43:49 with Lee Newton in 3rd in 01:46:55 and Rupert Bonington in 8th and 2nd placed V40 in 01:53:15. Mark said, “I was delighted to start my season off with a win and I’ve not run over here before so it’s always good to see how you compare to the local runners.”
The Cheviots are renowned for their exposed, boggy and heather packed terrain which does not make for easy running. Lee commented, “That was hard going, not as steep as some of our Lakeland fell races but with it being so boggy underfoot it was energy sapping. Cold too on’t top as we went from bog to frozen ground. Really enjoyed the race and delighted to get on the podium.”
The race had an unusual finish which took everyone by surprise, Rupert said, “We were filthy by the time we came off the fell but coming towards the finish we were diverted towards the river, I was up to my waist, thought that was a bit fresh and then I looked up and saw there were two more crossings to negotiate! Good news was I’ve never finished a fell race with such clean trainers.”
Next up is Kong Adventures Brian Clough Head race this Sunday at 11.0am, starting at the King Kong workshop, Threlkeld Quarry.
