[U]llswater Yacht Club has been named as one of the top five sailing clubs in the country by the Royal Yachting Association.
The club has been shortlisted for the RYA’s Club of the Year Award as the winner of the ‘Increasing Participation’ category. The overall winner from five finalists will be announced at the RYA Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace on Saturday, March 4.
UYC members are planning to travel to the London show to support club officials at the presentation of the prestigious award.
Commodore Peter Lewis said: “This is a real honour for our club and an acknowledgement of all the work our volunteers have put into attracting newcomers to sailing. We are very proud to be part of the RYA and delighted to receive an award for our efforts to increase participation in sailing and grow our membership.”
The awards are split into five categories: Innovation, Inclusivity, Facility Development. Increasing Participation and Communications. The RYA Honours and Awards Panel has selected five finalist clubs, one from each of the categories.
The club’s winning submission highlighted the efforts that have gone on over the past year into getting newcomers to sailing on the water including:
Penrith Show: Attracting more than 200 people to the stand to try shore sailing, find out about the club and give their contact details.
I am Team GB Day: In August in celebration of the Rio Olympics club instructors took 507 visitors for sailing taster sessions and more than 1000 people took part in the event.
Go Sailing sessions for adults: The discount learn-to-sail sessions started in September 2016 and were hugely successful. The club is now taking bookings for sessions in 2017.
UYC has already been named Club of the Year 2017 by Yachts and Yachting magazine, receiving the national trophy at a presentation at the London Boat Show last month. (January 12)
