Penrith ladies canoe polo team had a very successful second tournament of the season on Saturday 18th Feb, finishing top of the league after a succession of wins against Lancaster, Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield Hallam.
The team of four had to borrow a player from Lancaster Red Rose to sustain the matches, however all players worked well together resulting in a team victory.
The success began against Lancaster with top goal scorer Deborah McConkey planting two goals early on, supported by forwards Jenny Mather and Katie Halls. Katie and goal keeper Hilary Clarke then followed suit to finish with a 4-2 victory.
With this achievement spurring them on, the ladies second match was against Manchester. A less structured match, with Penrith dominating the whole way through ending 6-1 to the Penrith team. Goal scorers: Heather Carter (1), Katie (2), Hilary (2), Deborah (1). The next game was against Liverpool, who had previously beaten Penrith.
However, with a rearranged team on both sides, Penrith fought a well earned 4-2 victory, with great teamwork up front, breaking the Liverpool defence and planting easy goals from Jenny (1), Heather (1) and Deborah (2).
The final match was against the weakest side in the league, so Penrith went into the match with high spirits and played a strong game; the Hallam side couldn’t get out of defence and the final score was 8-0. It was smiles all round as the team left to get their well earned fish and chips.
