Man seriously injured in A595 Mealsgate crash

WigtonPOLICE are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision on the A595 at Mealsgate this morning (27 Feb).

The collision involved a black Ford Focus and a HGV tipper truck.

Cumbria Constabulary were called to the incident at 7.32am.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 22-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and is receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

A spokesman for GNAAS said: “The North West Ambulance Service requested GNAAS to attend an RTC involving a heavy goods vehicle and a car at 0745 this morning.

“Responding from the charity’s Langwathby base, the aircraft and crew were on scene within 11 minutes of lifting.

“We worked alongside North West Ambulance Service and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service on scene. The driver of the car was freed from the vehicle before they were anaesthetised on scene by our doctor led crew.

“They were flown to the RVI in Newcastle in 22 minutes.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 7:47am firefighters were called to a report of a road traffic collision on the A595 at Mealsgate.

“Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to extricate one casualty, a man, who was then handed into the care of the ambulance service.”

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision but has yet to come forward. Call 101 quoting incident number 21 of 27 February 2017.
