[O]ne of the leading destination organisations in the UK, Cumbria Tourism, is inviting applications for seven new Non-Executive Directors to help drive forward the county’s £2.62 billion tourism industry.
As a private company limited by guarantee, Cumbria Tourism is owned by its 2,400 members, who recently ratified plans to agree a new Board structure at an Extraordinary General Meeting.
Applications are now open for a total of seven vacancies for Non-Executive Directors, to help create a more streamlined and efficient leadership. Public sector bodies will continue to be represented on the Board, but there will be a renewed focus on the private sector to better reflect Cumbria Tourism’s commercial aims and ambitions.
Each new appointee will need to demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for improving all aspects of Cumbria’s tourism industry, along with a specialist knowledge and expertise in one of seven categories. Applications are invited from candidates with experience and expertise of:
A large tourism business
A small tourism business
Professional services or supply chain business
Public relations and communications
Brand and strategic marketing
Chairman of Cumbria Tourism, Eric Robson, says, “Cumbria Tourism has changed enormously in the last few years, to become a more agile, entrepreneurial and financially independent organisation. To reflect this, our Board structure also needs to evolve and we are inviting applications from experienced, commercially minded professionals to help guide and support both the organisation and the wider tourism industry in Cumbria into a new era.”
Chairman of Cumbria Tourism’s Commercial Members’ Committee is Mike Turner. He says; “Cumbria Tourism plays a vital role in marketing the county as a leading visitor destination and these changes are all about helping the organisation to take a more efficient, industry-led approach. The feedback we’ve had from members has been very encouraging and we see the creation of these new roles as a positive way forward in the months and years ahead.”
Each newly appointed Non-Executive Director will hold office for a term of three years; they will then retire and be eligible for re-election for a maximum of three terms.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 7 April 2017 and the new Board is expected to be in place for Cumbria Tourism’s Annual General Meeting in June.
