Man arrested after woman dies in Kendal house blaze

[P]OLICE were called to an address in Stramongate in Kendal in the early hours of this morning (26 March 2017) following a house fire.

A 67-year-old woman who resides at the address suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary. However, she has subsequently died.

Officers have arrested a 38-year-old man in connection with this incident. He is currently in police custody.

Cumbria Constabulary is working with colleagues at Cumbria Fire and Rescue as the investigation continues.

Firefighters, two wearing breathing apparatus, used a hose reel jet to bring the fire under control.

Officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with this incident at this time but would like to hear from anyone who has yet to come forward and who may have information which could assist their investigation. Anyone who can assist is urged to call 101 quoting incident number 33 of today (26 March 2017).

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “Five casualties were reported and given medical attention by firefighters and ambulance crews.

“At least two of the casualties, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital where it has been reported that, despite everyone’s best efforts, the female casualty has sadly lost her life.

“Crews were at the scene for around three hours.”
