Man admits murdering Daniel McMullen in Workington

[A] 22-year-old man has today pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to murdering 29-year-old Daniel McMullen at Beech Court in Workington on 7 January 2017.

Following a night out, a group of friends returned to Daniel McMullen’s house where Calvin Patrickson of Newlands Gardens stabbed him numerous times to the legs, arms and chest.

Police were called at 7.33am to reports of a man injured at a property on Beech Court. The man was pronounced dead shortly after by paramedics.

Two of the stab wounds penetrated his heart and lungs which proved to be fatal.

Stuart Pattinson for the CPS said: “This is a tragic case of a night out with friends ending with devastating consequences.

“It was the prosecution case that following a disagreement, the two men made amends. However, soon afterwards Calvin Patrickson carried out a pre-meditated attack by arming himself with a knife from the kitchen which he used to stab Daniel multiple times.

“Patrickson showed little or no remorse for his actions at the time.  The CPS worked closely with the police to build a strong prosecution case, which left him with no other choice than to plead guilty to murder.

“We hope that today’s plea offers the family and friends of Daniel McMullen a sense that justice has been served.  Our thoughts are very much with them at this time.”
