[A] man has been sentenced today (28th April 2017) after stabbing a man in a pub in Whitehaven last year.
Tyrone Glaister, aged 50 of Duke Street in Whitehaven, has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order which can only be overturned on the authority of a secretary of state. He also entered a guilty plea for possessing an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing.
At around 10:45pm on Saturday 1st October 2016 Glaister stabbed his victim, a 50 year old man from Whitehaven, at The Three Tons Public House, Whitehaven, with a hunting knife. The victim was taken to hospital and has undergone surgery for a damaged bowel.
A friend of the victim, a 50 year old man from Whitehaven, was also injured during the incident – sustaining injuries to his shoulder blade.
DC David Matthews said: “I am pleased that Glaister has been brought before the courts to answer for his actions. This was an unprovoked attack and followed years of threatening behaviour from Glaister.
“I would like to take this opportunity to praise the bravery of the people who witnessed the incident and stepped in to try and disarm Glaister. This incident has not just affected the men who were injured but a number of members of the public who stated that it was the most frightening event of their lives.
“We cannot work effectively unless we are supported by the local community and I extend my gratitude to the many witnesses that were willing to provide statements and assist police. The victims have demonstrated tremendous bravery throughout the case; they also wish to thank all concerned.”
