[A] Cumbrian car show, which started five years ago with just 25 cars is bidding to welcome as many as 500 this weekend.
The Cumbria International Motor Show was the brainchild of Dalton-in-Furness car enthusiast, David Robinson. David thought up the idea on a whim when he spotted an Aston Martin and asked the owner if he would bring his car to a new show.
From that moment, the show was born and, although David had never had any previous experience of holding an event, the first one took place in the car park of the Lakeland Motor Museum in spring 2012.
The first show attracted around 70 people and had 25 cars on display (including the Aston Martin!). Five years on and the new venue of the Westmorland Show Ground at Crooklands near Kendal is set to host upwards of 5,000 people and around 500 cars as well as musical acts, food, drink and retail stands, and entertainment for all the family.
David said: “Ever since that first show, I’ve wanted it to be not just about the cars, but a lifestyle event. People come here for a full day out and travel from all over the country for the show so it was important to me that there was enough to keep dad, mum and kids interested all day. There’s nothing better than looking around on the day and seeing people happy and having fun.
“I always had ambitions for the show but I never really expected it to become so big so quickly. Its nice now that people are knocking on my door to get involved, which shows that there is definitely an appetite for something like this in Cumbria.”
The 2017 Cumbria International Motor Show takes place from 11am – 5pm this Sunday 14th May at the Westmorland Show Ground at Crooklands near Kendal. This year’s show will include more than 100 Porsche’s – including the large hospitality unit from Silverstone, a dream garage of up to 50 supercars and more than 30 local trader’s stalls including Wave Jewellery, Gees Clothing, and the Snaffle Gin & Cake Bar.
