Man who took 10 inch knife into Maryport shop sent to prison

Carlisle Crown Court

A MAN seen wandering around a convenience store with a 10in knife tucked into his trouser waistband has been sent to prison.

Ryan Neil Simpson, 38, received a 10-month jail term at Carlisle Crown Court. He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in a public place on March 26.

The court heard Simpson was “acting strangely” as he walked around Maryport Co-op with a shopping basket. Police were called after the large knife was seen within his clothing, and placed him in handcuffs.

Hearing Simpson, of Senhouse Street, Maryport, had previous convictions for offensive weapon and bladed article, Judge Peter Davies imposed an immediate prison sentence.

“Knives are too dangerous,” said Judge Davies. “I am not tolerating that on the streets of Cumbria.”
