[S]outh Lakeland District Council has been recognised for the way it supports staff with disabilities.
The council has become a Disability Confident Employer as part of a government scheme which encourages the recruitment and retention of disabled people in the workplace.
Councillor Brenda Gray, SLDC’s Portfolio holder for Council Organisation and People, said: “We are proud to have been recognised as a Disability Confident Employer. Disabled people can face many challenges getting and keeping a job and we would strongly encourage other local employers to follow South Lakeland District Council’s lead.”
The Disability Confident scheme encourages employers to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to the workplace.
The scheme also helps to increase the understanding of disability, challenge attitudes, remove barriers to those with long-term health conditions and ensure they fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.
