[A] MAN who allowed dealers to peddle illegal drugs from his Workington home has been spared immediate prison.
Albert Newell, 22, agreed to house two Liverpool men he initially thought were legitimate contractors over several weeks last year. He was also paid to drive them back to their native Merseyside four times.
It emerged the men – known only as “John and Ronnie”, and never caught by police – were preparing heroin and cocaine at his Mossbay Road address to be sold.
Carlisle Crown Court heard that when Newell realised the extent of the pair’s criminality, he evicted them and alerted police. He then made “full and frank” admissions to police about his involvement.
Newell, now of Pica Cottages, Pica, admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin and cocaine; and two charges of permitting his premises to be used for the supply of the class A drugs.
After hearing Newell was now trying lead a law-abiding life, Judge Peter Davies suspended a two-year prison term for two years. Newell must also complete 250 hours’ unpaid work.
